Six Tips for Styling your Newborn Photoshoot

How to Style your Newborn Photoshoot at Home

A newborn photoshoot at home is a perfect way to capture your baby’s first few weeks and months. It happens in the place where you live and spend real time with your baby bringing beautiful authenticity to your photos. Your choice of outfits should support that also, and be something you feel at ease in, keeping the focus on the connection between you and your baby. Here are 6 quick tips for styling your newborn photoshoot at home.

1. So for you Mama, start with your outfit. Choose that first because it will help guide everything else. You have just had a beautiful little baby, and you want to pick something that makes you feel confident. Keep it to simple pieces in soft or neutral colours. Cream, sage, grey, blush and muted blue will work well. Pick fabrics that feel comfortable and have a bit of movement like cotton, linen or soft knits. Avoid anything that needs constant adjusting or feels restrictive when you sit and hold your baby. I would generally steer away from dark colours, unless that is what feels right for your personal style.

2. Next, choose your gorgeous little baby’s outfit. A plain onesie, a little two-piece set and some soft knits are enough. If you choose a pattern, keep it gentle so it does not dominate the photos. Simple texture can add interest without feeling busy, something like a little knitted cardigan can be really cute. If your baby has a special blanket, it is nice to have it to hand.

3. After that, choose outfits for the rest of the family. You can stay within a similar palette without matching exactly. Think in terms of shared tones rather than identical outfits. So if you are wearing creams or neutrals, muted blues or biscuit tones for your partner can match really nicely. Avoid bold logos or loud patterns so nothing pulls attention away from interactions with the baby.

4. If siblings will he there, pick clothes they can play and be comfortable in. A basic romper, dress or trousers and a shirt will usually work. Keep patterns subtle. Make sure they can sit on the floor, climb onto the couch and be part of the session without worrying about their clothing. Keep them in tones that sit comfortably next to baby’s outfit.

5. For makeup, focus on even skin and a natural finish. I would say to avoid heavy make up, or make up that has a a lot of shimmer (or very dewy) as this can attract light and create facial sheen. Aim for a smooth base, defined lashes and brows and a soft lip. Think about how close the camera might be when you hold the baby. Your makeup should feel like your everyday face with a a tiny bit more polish.

6. If you use fake tan (as most of us do!), its best to keep is subtle and light. Strong tan or overly warm tones can show up clearly next to a newborn’s skin. Apply it a few days before the shoot if you want some colour so it settles and looks more even.

Most importantly, the priority for me is your comfort. You will sit, stand, move around and pause often to settle and comfort your baby. Clothing that lets you do that without fuss will make the photoshoot feel easier. Remember that my aim for the photoshoot is not about perfection. It is creating a setting where your family can be together and look like yourselves, just as you normally are at home.
