The 5 Best Locations for a Family Photoshoot in South Dublin

Five Locations I Love for a Family Photoshoot.

So you are thinking about a family photoshoot but you’re not sure where to have it? Between coordinating nice outfits, hoping the Irish weather holds up, and praying the kids are in a good mood you have enough to worry about. Let me help you with location!

As a family photographer based here in Dublin, I spend a lot of time scouting locations even when i am out and about with my own family. Over the years, I’ve found that the absolute best photos happen when kids have the space to run, play, and just be themselves, so my favourite locations all have this in mind

If you are looking for safe spaces for kids to roam that are also a gorgeous backdrop, here are some of my favourite locations for an outdoor family photoshoot in South Dublin.

1. Marlay Park, Rathfarnham

Marlay Park is a classic for a reason. It offers a little bit of everything, making it versatile for a family gallery.

  • The Vibe: Magical woodlands and secret gardens.

  • Why it works for kids: The walled garden also offers a gorgeous, enclosed space where kids can safely explore. Plus there are plenty of options to get treats afterwards in the cafes (or even at the weekend market)

  • Best time to go: Early morning to beat the busy weekend crowds, or late afternoon to catch that stunning golden hour light filtering through the trees.

2. Bushy Park, Terenure

If you want a session that feels relaxed and local, Bushy Park is a hidden gem for photography.

  • The Vibe: Nature-filled & accessible.

  • Why it works for kids: It’s easy to navigate with a buggy and features the beautiful duck pond. The mature trees provide gorgeous, dappled shade and there is a gorgeous playground for afterwards.

  • Best time to go: It is stunning in Autumn, but early Spring is just as beautiful when the daffodils start to pop up. Any time is good, this photo was taken in winter time! These trees are my favourite spot in the park.

3. Killiney Hill

For families who love a bit of adventure and don't mind a mini-hike, Killiney Hill is perfection.

  • The Vibe: Sweeping coastal views & wilder nature.

  • Why it works for kids: This is fantastic for slightly older kids who love to explore. It feels like an adventure, and the elevation yields incredibly cinematic, sweeping family portraits with the sea in the background.

  • Best time to go: Sunset, without a doubt. The way the light hits Dublin Bay from the top of the hill is pure magic.

4. St. Enda’s Park, Rathfarnham

Sometimes overlooked in favor of Marlay Park next door, St. Enda's is actually one of my absolute favorite spots for a quieter session.

  • The Vibe: Historical & peaceful.

  • Why it works for kids: It is usually much quieter than other major parks, giving shy kids the space to warm up. The historic courtyard, stone walls, and wildflower meadows give a really timeless, classic feel to your gallery. The lavender in summer is beautiful.

  • Best time to go: Mid-morning to get the best light. Parts of St Endas are quite shaded

5. Dun Laoghaire Pier & Baths

If you are less "walk in the woods" and more "breezy sea air," heading out to the coast provides a great backdrop.

  • The Vibe: Breezy & Coastal

  • Why it works for kids: It’s perfect for lifestyle shots. Think eating ice cream (Teddy's, obvs!), throwing stones in the water, and running along the promenade. It results in a very fun, dynamic gallery. Just maybe not one for toddlers!

  • Best time to go: Overcast days actually work beautifully here. The soft light brings out the pastel colors of the sea and sky, completely avoiding the harsh shadows you get at the beach on a sunny day.

Ready to Update Your Family Albums?

At the end of the day, the best location is really the one where your family feels the most relaxed. I dont mind chasing toddlers through the woods and parks, or getting some breezy shots by the sea. If you guys are happy, so am I.
