Autumn Family Photography in Dublin
If you have been putting off booking a family session, autumn is the time to get onto it!
From September through to the end of November, Dublin is genuinely one of the most beautiful places to photograph families outdoors. The light changes completely from summer. Its lower in the sky and warmer in tone…with that golden hour quality arriving earlier in the afternoon and lasting longer. It is the kind of light that does a lot of the work for you and is complementary to everyone.
Locations Ideas for Autumn Family Photography in Dublin
Howth Head Howth in autumn has a wildness to it that you simply do not get in summer. The heather and the sea….it is dramatic and beautiful and completely different to a park session. For families who want something with real character, this is beautiful. However you are exposed to the elements, so we need to plan for a reschedule date, just in case.
Phoenix Park The scale of Phoenix Park means you are never short of options. The tree-lined avenues are gorgeous in October when the leaves are turning, and the deer are a bonus that children absolutely love. I also love the grandeur of Farmleigh.
Marlay Park and the Dublin Mountains The walled garden, the woodland paths and the open parkland all work beautifully in autumn, and the mountain backdrop gives images a real sense of place. This one is local to me, so i know it inside and out. There are lots of spots like the lake, and the playgrounds that will keep all ages happy.
Malahide Castle Huge amounts of parkland on the north side of Dublin, with mature woodland that comes into its own in autumn. Children have space to run and explore, which almost always produces the best images. There is also the playground, which to me is one of the best in Dublin. And also don’t forget Avoca for the post shoot treats / coffee / family meal. This place is a real winner all around.
The Irish National War Memorial Gardens, Islandbridge One of Dublin's most underused photography locations. The formal gardens, the stone structures and the open lawns along the Liffey are stunning in autumn and the location is rarely crowded. There are also some beautiful sunken gardens that make for great shots, but maybe not for toddlers that might trip on the steps!
What to Wear
This is the question I get asked most before every session and the answer in autumn is straightforward. Warm, comfortable layers in earthy and autumnal tones work just great.
Think burnt orange, rust, forest green, camel, burgundy, warm cream. Colours that sit naturally in the landscape rather than fighting against it. Avoid bright white and very dark navy or black, which can look heavy against the warmth of autumn colours.
The most important thing is that everyone is comfortable. Children who are cold or restricted by their clothes are harder to photograph. Layers work well because you can add or remove them during the session depending on the weather…which in Ireland in October is always a consideration.

When to Book
Autumn sessions are available from September through to the end of November. October tends to be the most popular month — the colours are at their best and the light is just great in the afternoons.
