Why a Family Photoshoot at Home Might Be for You
If you have been thinking about getting family photos done but the whole idea of it feels like a lot…then this one is for you.
No travelling, no getting everyone into the car. I come to you, and what happens from there will suprise you.
What an At-Home Session Actually Looks Like
I arrive, you have a cup of tea, the kids size me up and decide whether they like me. By the time that's done we're usually getting good stuff already
I follow what's happening rather than directing it. If the kids want to show me something like a toy, the dog, their bedroom…then we go there. If there's a cuddle on the sofa that becomes a photo. If there's a bit of fun in the kitchen, that becomes a photo too. I'm looking for the real moments, and at home there's never a shortage of those.
Your House Does Not Need to Be Tidy
I say this at every consultation because people keep apologising when I arrive. I frame my shots around the people, not the stuff or the furniture. The light coming through your living room window is what I'm actually there for.
Who It Works Well For
Newborn families make up a big part of what I do at home, but these sessions work beautifully at any stage. Toddlers who don't travel well. Families where getting everyone somewhere is a logistical headache. Parents who want something that looks and feels like their actual life rather than a photoshoot. And of course, large and extended group photos are often best at home where everyone can gather.
They work particularly well for a second or third child, when you already know how fast it goes and you want something that captures your home exactly as it is right now — not a version of it you prepared for a camera.
The Photos You Will Actually Want to Look At
There is a particular kind of family photo that ends up on walls and gets looked at for decades, and this can be from an at-home session. Not because outdoor photos aren't beautiful…they are of course…but because there's a warmth to being photographed in your own space that is very hard to replicate anywhere else.
Your home is where your family actually lives. It seems like an obvious place to photograph them.
